| 1. |
Personalize the bag using iron-on lettering, appliqué
or machine embroidery. Begin by folding the placemat
in half with wrong sides together. The top edge will
be the shorter side of the placemat.
|
| 2. |
Determine the front and back of the bag and mark the
center front using a white or disappearing ink marking
pen.
|
| 3. |
Personalize the bag front using the method of choice
centering the design. Remember the fold is on the bottom
and the finished edge is the top.
|
| 4. |
Refold bag, right sides together. Pin along sides matching
top edges.
|
| 5. |
At each top corner, mark ½” from the outside edge.
On the bottom edges, mark 1½” from outside edge
along fold. Draw a line from the top mark to the bottom
mark.
|
| 6. |
Sew along marked line on each side, removing pins as
necessary. Reinforce the top edges with a backstitch.
|
| 7. |
To create a bottom gusset (a fold in the bottom of the
bag that creates a box-like shape): With right sides together,
fold bag so that side seams are aligned against the center
of bottom fold. This will create a triangle on the bottom
corner. Sew across triangle where the fabric folds back
along the seam line. See Figure A. Repeat for the opposite
side.
|
| 8. |
Turn bag to right side.
|
| 9. |
To position ribbon handles: Measure 3” from each
side seam line and mark on front and back.
|
| 10. |
Position the ribbon on marks creating a loop and leaving
approximately a 9” tail on each side. Topstitch
in place.
|
| 11. |
Tie ends of ribbon into a knot close to topstitching
line. Trim ends into a “V” and seal ends with
Fray Check™.
